Bearded Dragon (Pogona Vitticeps)
The Central or Inland Bearded Dragon is indigenous to the arid and semi-arid woodlands and desert regions of Central Australia and was originally imported into North America in the mid 1980's. These semi arboreal creatures love to climb and spend much of their time "basking", often on rock outcroppings or exposed tree limbs but will also burrow into the earth or hide in shaded areas to cool themselves. Bearded dragons can grow to an adult size of 18 to 24" in length and can live 10+ years. Generally, 6 - 8 years seems to be the average range in captivity but much depends on their proper care as well as their genetics and general health. Dragons are omnivores and require both animal and vegetable matter to properly obtain the various required nutrients, vitamins and minerals to support their rapid growth. Although juvenile dragons are generally "skittish" this usually calms down by the age of 8 -10 months and is normal behavior. Adult dragons often interact with their owners and fully display their own individual personalities. Head bobbing, bowing and waving are some of the ways you may see your dragon "communicate". The most commonly available dragon is the "Normal" dragon and is generally brown/yellow/grey in color. There are also dragons that display varied colors naturally and through selective breeding a wider range of colors are also available and are commonly referred to as "Color Morphs". Considered to be one of the most intelligent of all reptiles, and known for its calm demeanor and ease of maintaining bearded dragons have become one of the most popular exotic pets available today.
